8 Best Destinations for Solo Female Travelers

As a solo female traveler, traveling can be quite daunting. Statistics for violence against women are downright harrowing, but there are many places in the world that are considered generally safe. Please take into consideration that this list is my personal opinion and safety is not guaranteed. With that in mind, here are my 8 best destinations for solo female travelers.

1. Iceland

The northern lights, ice caves formed from water of thousands of years past, and black sand beaches set against monoliths of snow white, this destination is a visual masterpiece. Soak in the natural geothermal hot springs while watching streaks of color flash through the night sky. Snorkel between tectonic plates on the Golden Circle and see geysers shoot up and waterfalls cascade down. Reykjavik is a perfect city for base and is filled with museums and cute cafes aplenty.

I felt super comfortable walking alone at night and never noticed any catcalling whatsoever. The crime rate here is low and the people are friendly.

2. Japan

You could spend years in Tokyo and not discover everything there is. Tokyo is full of hi-tech innovations, impressive cityscape views, mouthwatering street food, and gorgeous temples. There’s sumo, samurai, anime, and animal cafes. If you decide to venture out and book a shinkansen out of the city, stop at the gorgeous Mt Fuji, stay in a traditional ryokan, and immerse yourself in an onsen. Kyoto has plenty of gems. It’s well known for the district of Gion full of practicing geishas, a photographable bamboo forest, and a golden temple.

4. Guatemala

One of the best backpacker trails in Central America. Make your first stop in the gorgeous colonial town of Antigua. You can hike the volcanoes surrounding Antigua, such as Volcano Pacaya, where you can roast marshmallows at the top. This is due to the heat that radiates from inside the volcano. The other is an overnight trail to the top of Volcano Acatenango to watch neighboring Volcano Fuego erupt all night. After Antigua, soak in the culture at Lago Atitlan and discover each Mayan village. Lastly, see Semuc Champey and finish off exploring the Mayan spectacle of Tikal.
