Me standing in cape town

My Favorite Things to Do in and around Cape Town

The most mesmerizing city in the world, I knew as soon as I saw the long coastline and the splendor of Table Mountain that I was going to fall in love with this vibrant place. Here is my list on the best things to do in and around Cape Town.

1. Visit Robben Island

This is where Nelson Mandela and many other political activists were imprisoned during the time of apartheid. Get here now because we are the last generation to be able to talk to those prisoners. The man that gave me the tour around the prison was imprisoned with Mandela and spoke about his experience being locked away. Rich in history and heartbreak, this gives you a glimpse into what apartheid did to the communities in South Africa. You won’t leave here with a dry eye.

2. Swim with Seals

Disembark from Hout Bay harbor and ride the waves on a small boat to Duiker Island. This island is home to a colony of around 5,000 cape fur seals and you will have the opportunity to see so many on the small rock they inhabit. Jump in the water and look down as seals swirl around you doing back flips. In April, you may even see some pups playing as well.

3. Table Mountain

Hike it or ride the cable car to the top and enjoy the spectacular views of the city and coast. For some extra thrills, abseil down the side.

4. Bo Kaap Neighborhood

My favorite area to just walk around and explore. Not only is it full of vibrantly painted houses, but also incredibly friendly people and a unique cuisine called Cape Malay. Take a free walking tour and get educated about the abundant history full of Malaysian, Indian, African, and Sri Lankan culture. The guide will also delve into the topic of gentrification and how it is impacting this community.

Cape Malaysian food is full of spices and distinct flavors that will have your taste buds tingling. You will notice lots of spicy curries and seasoned meats. Try bobotie which is a curried minced meat dish mixed with raisins and topped with a crisp egg topping. Then for dessert pick up some koeksisters which is a fried, sticky snack like a donut drenched in sweet syrup. You will be licking your fingers off.

The best local joint to try the classics is Biesmiellah’s. Not only is the food delectable here, but the owner is a super nice guy.

5. Vineyard Tour

You are now in wine country and must indulge at one of the many vineyards in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl. There are two main tours you can choose from, or you can drive to the vineyards yourself. The tour I chose included 15 wine tastings at 3 different estates. The other choice is a wine tram that looks like great fun on a beautiful day.

6. Hike Cape of Good Hope

Beautiful views! It’s one of the most southern points in Africa, but the southernmost tip is located at Cape Agulhas. While here I was able to see wild ostriches and eland, but you may also spot zebra. I enjoyed the hike up to see the lighthouse and the walk from there to see the dreamy landscapes is stunning. Don’t just take my word for it, look at the pictures I captured, and I am no photographer.

7. See the African Penguins

These adorable waddling critters are a joy to watch while they nest, swim, and feed. There are two main viewpoints to see them. I traveled to the Boulders Beach location, but there are more in Stony Point. The sad news is that the penguin population is dwindling down. The main reasons include attacks by other animals including pets and some habitat loss.

8. Kirstenbosch

A huge botanical garden that covers an area of around 2 square miles and is home to 2,500 species of plants. Wandering through here will make you feel like you stumbled upon the Garden of Eden.

These were my choices for the greatest activities, but you could spend years here and not discover everything. There are modern museums, buzzing markets, and let’s not forget the incredible surf. Enjoy!

If you aren’t just going to be heading to Cape Town and want to do a safari, check out my experience with a bush walk. Maybe you can give it a shot.
