I knew that Ecuador had the Galapagos, the Amazon, and the biggest market in South America. However, I did not realize how tasty and unique their food was until I got to experience it. Here are my top picks.
1. Cuy (Guinea Pig)
Guinea pig can be made a few different ways, but the most traditional method is roasting the meat on a stick over the fire. Another way you will see it prepared is by frying it. Guinea pig meat is a mix between chicken and rabbit in my opinion. There is a few chewy bits and you have to watch out for the bones. Overall, it is pretty good, just make sure to go to a reputable place.
2. Fresh Fruit
There are many fruits unique to the regions of Ecuador and Colombia. Some examples include naranjilla, guanabana, taxo, and tomate de arbol.
3. Chicha
Chicha is a fermented drink that can be made with the yuca root. The yuca root needs to be washed and mashed. It is usually fermented by the process of chewing the root up and spitting it out. It is then allowed to ferment 1-7 days.
4. Chocolate
A fun activity in Ecuador is to attend a chocolate making class. You go straight to the source by trying the fruit and then your teacher will roast the beans. After roasting it is time to peel them and grind them. Afterwards, mix the ground chocolate with milk, sugar, and vanilla extract. One taste and you will never feel the same way about a Hershey bar ever again.
5. Mistelas Candy
A candy that is filled with alcohol. This is a traditional candy that was made by women when they were not allowed to drink.
6. Bizcochos
A biscuit of sorts that is salty and served with super sweet coffee along with a fresh mozzarella stick. Tiny shops serving these are located everywhere.
7. Empanadas
Crispy outer dough filled with savory ingredients such as a choice of meat, vegetables, and cheese.
Ecuador de viento is the Ecuadorian twist to the empanada. It is a dough stuffed with cheese and fried. Once it is done frying it is doused with white sugar.
8. Aji
This spicy sauce is used often. Locals drizzle it on many types of food, and everyone has their own little recipe for it. Typically made out of lime juice, onions, garlic, cilantro, and peppers.
9. Helados de Paila
This is like a sorbet or ice-cream, but there are three main ingredients. The ingredients consist of fruit, water, and sugar. Popular flavors are soursop, blackberry, naranjilla, and strawberry. You can choose to have it served in a cone or cup.
