Here is a list of my top 9 foods to eat in Egypt. This guide also includes a bonus section of two must try traditional drinks while you are there.
1. Koshary
The national dish of Egypt, this is a cheap and filling meal. It is composed of noodles, lentils, tomato sauce, rice, and crispy onions.
2. Kenda Iskandarani
Juicy liver inside a fresh bun.
3. Kofta
This dish consists of grilled minced meat that is typically beef and/or lamb. Kofta can be made in a variety of ways and each person that creates it has their own unique blend of spices that may include garlic, cardamom, cumin, and turmeric.
4. Sambousek
Crispy fried outside with chewy warm cheese filling on the inside.
5. Baba Ghanoush
Similar to hummus but made with roasted eggplant instead of chickpeas. It is mixed with olive oil, sesame seeds, garlic, and lemon.
6. Shawarma
Thinly sliced meat such as beef and lamb are placed in a warm bun. It is usually served with shawarma sauce and fillings can include tomatoes, onions, pickles, and more.
7. Zalabia Balls
Fried dough balls that are topped with a simple syrup. Other topping variations include honey and chocolate.
8. Ful Medames
Mashed fava beans that have garlic, cumin, and lemon in it. This is a cheap street food, that is an Egyptian classic.
9. Egyptian Icecream
There are ice creameries everywhere and people line up to eat the sweet treat.
Bonus: Hibiscus Tea and Sugarcane Juice
Sugar cane is the largest agriculture product in Egypt and drinking fresh squeezed sugar cane is a must.
Hibiscus tea has a floral flavor with a hint of sweet and sourness to it.
The food is great in Egypt, but the sites are even better. Take a peek at my Egyptian guide:
